Tembisa Hospital- The Democratic Alliance (DA) has taken decisive legal action against Lerato Madyo, the former Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Gauteng Department of Health, in connection with alleged large-scale corruption at Tembisa Hospital. On Wednesday, the party formally laid seven criminal charges at the Johannesburg Central Police Station, accusing Madyo of failing to act on critical information linked to irregular and fraudulent transactions uncovered by the late whistleblower Babita Deokaran.
According to the DA, the criminal charges against Lerato Madyo stem from her alleged failure to act on warnings and documentation submitted by Babita Deokaran shortly before her tragic death. Deokaran, a senior Gauteng health official, had raised red flags regarding suspicious payments and tender processes at Tembisa Hospital, a facility already under intense public scrutiny for financial mismanagement.

It covers financial misconduct — willfully or failing to exercise the duties of an accounting officer. These are very serious charges. We focused on them because they are directly relevant to the role of a chief financial officer and what Ms Madyo failed to do,” Bloom explained.
Tembisa Hospital has been at the heart of multiple corruption investigations over the past few years. What began as internal concerns raised by Babita Deokaran has now become a full-scale legal and political storm.
