The National Department of Health last week confirmed that it’s initiated an urgent investigation into possible food poisoning in Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, and Gauteng following the deaths of children who allegedly consumed toxic noodles.
Earlier this month, two Mpumalanga siblings died after sharing a packet of instant noodles.
A week after that, the Health Department reported a similar incident in the Eastern Cape that claimed the lives of three children.
Officials said samples of the leftovers were collected and sent for testing.
The MEC for Health in Mpumalanga, Sasekani Manzini, gave an update on the probe into the latest deaths, involving two siblings.
“We can confirm two cases of kids that have died and one that was taken to Embalenhle Clinic and soon was then discharged,” Manzini said.
“What we cannot confirm is [the poisoning is], as a result of the noodles, but as a department, we are working with the police who took those noodles to be tested.”
