As the country commemorates Youth Day, Action SA leader Herman Mashaba has raised concern over the youth’s disinterest in voting.
Mashaba said the only way to honour the youth of 1976 is to encourage young people to participate at next year’s elections.
During the general elections in 2019, only 3.7% of people aged between 20 and 29 cast their votes.
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC ) also announced that over 27-million people eligible to vote during the 2021 provincial and local government elections did not vote.
There have been suggestions from various political parties and civil society organizations that the low voter turnout by the youth is a major cause for concern.
This sentiment has now been echoed by the Action SA which believes next year’s elections will be a perfect time to dethrone the governing African National Congress.
The green party said too many people have died in the fight for South Africa’s democracy – and their legacies need to be honoured by encouraging young people to vote.
It said if the majority of the youth does not take their concerns to the ballots, state coffers will continue to be looted.
