Electricity price hike on the cards

Consumers are in for more power price hikes. Electricity tariffs will increase by more than 15 per cent from 1 April for users that buy power directly from Eskom. Municipalities will experience an increase in July.

The Pretoria High Court has ordered energy regulator Nersa to add R10-billion to Eskom’s allowable revenue to be recovered from tariff customers in the 2021/2022 financial year.

The news of further increases comes as the utility continues to advocate for cost-reflective tariffs. Businesses, however, argue that many enterprises cannot survive higher power prices.
