EFF MPs could face action for Parliament disruptions

EFF MPs could face action in Parliament for stalling the State of the Nation Address in February. They objected to the presence of former President FW de Klerk.

At least 18 of the party’s MPs are also set to face possible sanction for storming the podium in July last year in attempts to block Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan from delivering his budget vote address.

Parliament’s Powers and Privileges Committee says it will now determine a process for charging MPs identified in the video footage in the incident involving Gordhan. But the EFF is warning that Parliament is not following legally sound procedure and it will again be found wanting by the courts.

“If the speaker referred EFF members who raised points of orders to the powers and privileges committee, she must be told there’s no such thing,” said EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

“She must tell us which member and that member broke which rule. Parliament has meanwhile appointed an advocate of the Cape Bar to lead proceedings against EFF MPs, who charged at Gordhan.
