Protesting staff shut down Eastern Cape hospital

Eastern Cape hospital workers are on a total shutdown.

They are protesting over a government gratuity that was supposed to be paid before 15 September.

Staff at All Saints Hospital near Umtata have shut down the facility, leaving patients stranded.

They say they won’t stop protesting until the money is paid.

A patient who arrived at the hospital for treatment said she had to leave after not getting any help.

“Can the government please assist us and give the employees the money that was promised to them because the government is the one who made the promise,” said Silviya Mdunyelwa.

“When I asked, they told me the money they want is gratitude money so they haven’t received it and they refuse to work.”
