Vacancy : Draughtsperson: Design Office – 12 Months Fixed Term Contract

A vacancy exists within COO Africa at the Corporate Office in Johannesburg for a Draughtsperson: Design Office.

THE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT OF THE ROLE:

The Africa Region (COO Africa) of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) is seeking an experienced Draughtsperson to join the Engineering department, based in Johannesburg, that supports the operating mines in Africa.
This role is responsible for the production of high-quality documentation in the form of 3D models/modelling, designs, drawings, etc. throughput the lifecycle of a project from conceptual studies to approved construction drawings. The role furthermore requires ad hoc visits and travel to the operations for onsite assessments, site measurements and/or verifications.
As a member of the AGA Engineering team, the role provides input into and support for the delivery of the overall company engineering strategy and on an adhoc basis support other regions in areas of technical competence and/or major initiatives rollout.
This role requires a high level of technical expertise in the development of effective and efficient engineering solutions.
The role is based in Johannesburg with site visits and travel as required. The successful candidate in the role will be appointed on contract.

The role can furthermore be seen in the context that the main functions of the Engineering department are to:

Develop appropriate technical design to de-risk the business, exploit opportunities and support the overall technical objectives.
Ensure design excellence to prevent harm to persons, damage to machinery and equipment.
Ensure the design-assist with the optimization of machinery and infrastructure performance and reliability.
Strive for cost-effectiveness, of design, through the identification of cost optimization opportunities.
Discipline mastery in engineering/maintenance inclusive of all associated functions from a discipline perspective such as infrastructure, HME, trackless, underground support, fixed plant, etc.
Continuously evaluate engineering risks and identify mitigating measures to control the risks.
Mentoring, assisting and guiding engineers/maintenance personnel to enable them to execute their duties aligned to discipline-specific objectives and standard operating procedures.
Ensuring all projects are technically and commercially appropriate regarding design, operability, optimal functionality and maintainability.
Provide assurance and governance relating to the discipline.
Evaluate new technology and facilitate with the implementation as appropriate.
Represent AGA in engagement with internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with the company’s strategic intent.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Diploma or equivalent qualification in a technical (preferably civil) discipline.
A recognized draughting or drawing-office practice, qualification or training.
At least 10 years of relevant experience in the Mining or Mine Process Plant sectors.
A minimum of 10 years draughting experience of which 5 years shall be in the use of 3D CAD software (i.e. 3D modelling to generate 2D engineering drawings) specifically AutoCAD (including Revit & Inventor), Bentley MicroStation & Solid Edge.
Track record of producing high-quality engineering drawings, in accordance with SANS 10111 or ISO-5459, from a conceptual design to detailed engineering and handover (as-built).
A firm understanding of revision-control and checking-control procedures.
Track record of successfully administering a document management system.
The ability to develop and maintain cad-libraries (symbols, blocks, self-populating title blocks).
Ability to self-expedite the gathering of required information from archives, vendor or sites to timeously produce the required engineering drawings.
Ability to self-check drawings for dimensional accuracy, good-clear presentation or layout, and technical completeness.
Ability to self-manage and trouble-shoot cad-software problems and updates.
Ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
Demonstrated capability in organizing work, setting priorities and exercising sound independent judgement.
Strong ability to work effectively with people, including high performing professional teams.
Strong interpersonal, influencing and communication skills.

Experience with the engagement and management of engineering consultants and contractors.
Willingness to travel to AGA’s operations/sites.

Advantageous Skillset:

Desirable Requirements:

Good grasp of technical language and draughting terminology.
Prokon working experience.
Shall have worked previously as a Draughtspersons, CAD Operator or 3D Modeller within the mining sector or EPCM (mining sector).
Experience within a large-project, multi-disciplinary EPCM environment.
Experience of working with multi-national and multi-cultural project teams is strongly preferred.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Deep understanding of the technical engineering field, as applied in a mining environment. Full understanding of commonly used technical terms.
Experience and knowledge in drawing office document management systems, applications (Bentley ProjectWise & MS SharePoint) and procedures.
Cross-functional awareness – broad understanding of engineering, mining, process plant and construction processes.
Able to proactively identify changes that impact existing drawings and require to be updated.
Good working knowledge of the MHSA (Mine Health and Safety Act) and relevant SANS Code in the production of designs.
Knowledge of industry or regulatory standards, regulations and codes pertinent to the design and systems related to the project.
Use of the RAM reliability-engineering principles in the design and systems related to the design project.
Conceptual understanding of open cast and underground mining and gold process plant environment.
Coordinate / facilitate with the engineering / project / operations / design team.
Engaging with stakeholders to define area specific requirements and outcomes.
Manage interfaces between all disciplines in terms of design and drawing to ensure the successful delivery of assigned work.
Collaborate in the drafting and review of project engineering scope of works for design consultants, equipment suppliers, contractors, etc.
Participate in design meetings, reviews and workshops.
Identify quality assurance requirements, in specific area, to be met by the project team.
Identify opportunities (optimization, performance, reduction, etc.) and ensure that these are pursued wherever appropriate.
Attend regular meetings and communicate regularly to keep all team members and project stakeholders up to date on the status of the deliverables.
Highlights areas of concern and corrective actions.
Competent in design and drawing software products, especially 3D modelling.
Strong leadership skills.
