Drake Mercilessly Trolled NBA Owner After Raptors Championship Run

Drake heavily trolled the Philadelphia 76ers’ former owner Michael Rubin on the road to the Toronto Raptors’ first NBA championship in 2019. During an appearance on Showtime’s All the Smoke podcast, Rubin told a story about Drizzy trolling him during and after the Raptors and 76ers’ matchup in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Drake apparently sent the Pennsylvania-bred billionaire a photo of him wearing Philly shorts and repeatedly called him following Kawhi Leonard’s buzzer-beating winner to clinch the series.

“My worst memory of Drake is in the middle of Game 7 of the playoffs, he sends me a picture of himself wearing Sixers shorts. He said, ‘I’m coming for you,’” Rubin recalled.

“As soon as I saw him in Sixers shorts, I said, ‘We’re losing this fucking game.’ That jinx-ass muthafucka,” he added, referencing the so-called “Drake Curse.” “Just put on these shorts and I knew it was a wrap.

“By the way, I’ve never seen someone FaceTime me more times and I ignore him more than after that game. He had no chill. We had just lost [to Kawhi’s shot] and he FaceTimed every two seconds. I just never picked up. I just went home depressed.”

Michael Rubin, who is the CEO of Fanatics, ended up selling his 10 percent stake in Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment last October, which completed a divestment as a limited partner of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils.

According to ESPN, Rubin divested his 11-year stake in the NBA and NHL franchises largely due to looming conflicts in the expansion of Fanatics into sports betting and individual player partnerships.

Drake rapped about Michael Rubin in his 2019 song “When to Say When,” which appeared on his Dark Lane Demo Tapes project.

“I watched Michael Rubin win a million off a couple hands/ I decide what to see next like it’s on-demand/ I decide what to be next like I’m switchin’ plans/ I’ma tell you what you feel next like the weatherman,” he rapped.

There were clearly no hard feelings following the Raptors’ win over the 76ers, with the pair spotted gambling together at Atlantis Casino in the Bahamas that same month. TMZ reported they were posted up at $500 minimum blackjack tables.
