Decision on mandatory jabs expected before end of January – Health Minister Joe Phaahla

Health Minister Joe Phaahla is hopeful a decision on mandatory vaccination will be made before the end of January as vaccine uptake remains low.

The minister earlier said government’s main priority remains to vaccinate all adults, at least up to 70 percent coverage.

Phaahla said he agrees with experts that COVID-19 is moving towards becoming an endemic disease and South Africa is ready for this. There has been a decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases recently.

The Health Department together with the National Institute for Communicable Diseases has revealed data that shows how vaccines protect against serious infection, also with the Omicron variant.
