More than two-thirds of the delegates at the Democratic Alliance (DA) conference voted in favour of amending the powers and functions of the party’s federal legal commission on Saturday.
This comes as constitutional amendments take centre stage at the party’s national congress.
Earlier some 2000 members debated changes to the criteria to nominate leadership candidates…
Up until now, the DA’s disciplinary body has not been able to make binding rulings in disputes referred to it.
But the commission’s chairperson Glynnis Breytenbach tabled an amendment that would see the disciplinary body decide on sanctions against members hauled before it for disciplinary action.
Delegates voted in favour of the constitutional amendment.
Another notable amendment that was adopted by the majority was for half of the legal commission to be made up of members with legal training and at least a sixth must have training in mediation.
Meanwhile, a procedural defect in the appointment of the federal legal commission or any of its members, will not invalidate any decision made by the commission.
