SCA dismisses Dirco bid to overturn interdict halting govt’s R50 million Cuba donation

The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA)’s dismissed a bid from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) to overturn an interdict that placed on ice the government’s planned R50 million donation to Cuba.
Last year, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Alvin Botes announced plans to donate R50 million to Cuba.
The announcement sparked widespread uproar and saw AfriForum turn to the High Court in Pretoria.
It secured an interdict halting the payment pending the outcome of a review application.
Last May, the High Court in Pretoria dismissed an application for leave to appeal against the interdict from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation.
The department then turned to the SCA but it, too, has now upheld the interdict.
In dismissing the department’s application, with costs, the SCA on Tuesday found there were no reasonable prospects of success in an appeal and further, that there were no other compelling reasons why an appeal should be heard.
The review application, meanwhile, was heard in May this year and judgment is still outstanding.
