Taxi passengers were left shaken and injured after a minibus taxi collided with a car and overturned in a dramatic crash on Sunday morning, 1 February, at the intersection of Old Faure Road and Baden Powell Drive.
The collision occurred at approximately 6.35am, leaving the taxi lying on its side in the middle of the roadway. Passengers were forced to scramble out through windows and doors as bystanders rushed to assist those trapped inside.
An eyewitness described the scene as chaotic and deeply distressing.
“They were all trying to get out through the windows and the front door. It was just chaos. Some people couldn’t escape on their own because they were seriously injured. Even the taxi driver was hurt,” the onlooker said.
According to witnesses, the taxi is believed to have gone through a red robot shortly before the impact.
“It was a terrible accident, but thankfully no one lost their life. I was traumatised. The cries of the passengers are still ringing in my ears,” the eyewitness added.
The other vehicle involved, a Kia, did not overturn but sustained extensive damage, with airbags deploying on impact. The driver of the car was also injured.
City of Cape Town Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs confirmed that a total of 13 people were hurt in the crash.
“Two people sustained serious injuries, while 11 suffered slight injuries. All injured parties were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment,” Jacobs said.
Police and emergency services attended the scene, managing traffic disruptions while paramedics stabilised the injured.
Police spokesperson Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that Klapmuts Police had opened a case of reckless and negligent driving following the incident.
“This office confirms that a case was opened after an accident at the corner of Baden Powell Drive and Old Faure Road on Sunday, 1 February, at around 6.35am. The circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation, and the injured were taken to medical facilities for further treatment,” Gwala said.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly during early morning hours when visibility can be reduced and roads may appear deceptively quiet. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
