
A manhunt has been launched after two young women who were reported missing were found murdered on Thursday, 8 January 2026. The victims have been identified as 25-year-old cousin sisters, Nontokozo Mazibuko and Andiswa Sontangane.
Nontokozo was last seen wearing a white cropped shirt, black leggings, and black-and-white Jordan Dunks, while Andiswa was wearing black baggy jeans and a black T-shirt at the time of her disappearance.
The pair were last seen in Evaton, Gauteng, around midnight at the end of December 2025. They were reported missing to police the following day after failing to return home or make contact with their families, sparking concern and a search effort.
Bodies discovered in Poortjie
South African Police Service spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the women’s bodies were discovered in Poortjie, south of Johannesburg.
“The bodies of two women who were previously reported missing were discovered in Poortjie on Thursday, 8 January 2026,” said Masondo.
He added that after the missing persons report was filed, police established a multidisciplinary task team made up of various SAPS units to trace the women.
Double murder investigation launched
Police have since opened a case of double murder and are actively pursuing several leads. Masondo confirmed that a manhunt is underway as investigators work to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killings.
The motive for the murders has not yet been disclosed, and police have urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
Family asks for privacy
The victims’ family has appealed for privacy during this difficult time and has declined to participate in media interviews.
“We do not want to do any interviews. We want to grieve in peace,” a family member said.
