COVID-19 Variant first traced in India found in Uganda

The deadly COVID-19 variant wreaking havoc in India has been detected in Uganda. Uganda’s Health Ministry says this should serve as a wake-up call and is urging citizens to continue exercising safety measures.

The variant spreads faster and causes more severe illness in younger people. The discovery comes just days after Uganda’s neighbour, Kenya suspended flights to and from India for two weeks.

India has recorded over 200,000 COVID-19 deaths. On Wednesday, the country recorded the highest number of cases reported in a single day across the world.
