The Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec, Johannesburg — most famous for hosting the Rand Show — is being repurposed for a higher purpose.
Next week, the Gauteng Health Department will unveil a COVID-19 facility in the building.
This comes as the province now has 909 confirmed cases.
The centre has been refurbished to operate as a quarantine facility.
But not all cases will be referred there.
“It’s only going to deal with isolation and quarantining. But with the need and the demand, we can be able to put up also 250,330 beds in ICU or hospital beds that we might require.
“But we are starting with isolation and quarantining,” said Gauteng Health MEC, Bandile Masuku.
There are other plans as well.
“We are also going to be in discussion with a number of BnB owners in Soweto just to also get to see how we also assist them to get facilities to be utilized also for quarantining and isolation,” Masuku added.
The department says it’s also in talks with several mines on the West Rand.
Additional facilities will be opened in Tshwane and in Ekurhuleni.
