The drama between Jackie Phamotse and Basetsana Kumalo just won’t go away
Jackie has accused the former Miss South Africa of using her name to help sell her new book, Bassie: My Journey of Hope. Jackie, who is also an author, made headlines in 2018 when Basetsana took legal action against her for controversial tweets she made.
The Bare: The Blesser’s Game author had hinted in the tweets that the husband of a local media mogul was involved in a s-e-x video with another man. While she did not mention the media mogul’s name, many of her followers assumed she was talking about Basetsana and her husband Romeo Kumalo.
They were granted a protection order against Jackie which prevented her from mentioning their names on any social media platform, and she faces up to five years in prison if she violated the Randburg Magistrate’s Court ruling. A defiant Jackie took a jab at the Kumalos in the title of her 2019 book, I Tweet What I like… So Sue Me. She told City Press that the court case gave her context about what she would write in the book.
Basetsana addresses her legal battles in her new memoir. Jackie faces a crimen injuria case after the Kumalos laid a charge against her in May 2019.
Jackie claims Bassie is using her name for book sales
“Basetsana has been saying things about me and I can’t do anything to defend myself. I’ve been silenced. She has served me with a protection order. But I guess she’s doing all of this to sell her book,” she told the Daily Sun.
She added that she has no idea why she is being charged by the Kumalos. I know I’m being charged but I don’t know for what. This is because I’ve not received any court documents, but I guess everything will be revealed in court,” she told the Daily Sun. Basetsana told the SowetanLive in an interview this month that she is “eagerly awaiting” her day in court.
“… all I want to know is why. It was such a concerted, systematic effort, it was thought through, clearly measured, but to what end? I just want an answer from Jackie Phamotse to say why. To say why she did this,” she said. The trial reportedly starts on October 21.
