The mood was filled with joy as congregants praised and worshipped while having their favourite drink. They were celebrating the lifted ban on booze.
This was a Sunday church service congregants at Gabola Church of all Nations had longed for.
They held their church service at Lakeside in the Vaal, south of Joburg, yesterday.
“When we do church we drink alcohol and preach, but we couldn’t do that when alcohol was banned,” said Pope Tsietsi Makiti, church founder and leader.
He said some members even started dodging church while others said they were quitting alcohol.
“We lost members. We prayed to our God to bring back alcohol, so that the lost souls could be found again,” he said.
Makiti said they observe social distancing during their celebration and everyone is sanitised.
“We say it again. We don’t want to create drinkers who’re not responsible,” he said.
“Gabola Church teaches responsibility. We hate incidents where people say alcohol causes problems.”
Church member Sbuda Dlamini (34) told Daily Sun he was thirsty for three months and missed his favourite beer.
“I feel fresh now that I’ve had a sip,” he said.
Another member, Nomvula Mbatha (40), said: “I think I’m in love with the president.
What he’s done is so sweet. I could kiss him right now.”
