Chelsea have strengthened their attacking options ahead of a busy summer by completing the signing of England Under-21 striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town in a £30 million deal. The 22-year-old forward has signed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge after the Blues activated a release clause in his contract, triggered by Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League.
Delap becomes one of the first major additions under new manager Enzo Maresca, as Chelsea prepare for next season’s return to the UEFA Champions League and their upcoming campaign in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Chelsea Secure Key Target Despite Competition
Chelsea reportedly beat out Premier League rivals Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Everton to land the promising striker. Sources close to the deal indicate that Chelsea will pay £20 million up front, with an additional £10 million in potential add-ons. Ipswich Town have also secured a sell-on clause as part of the agreement.
Delap spoke enthusiastically about joining Chelsea, highlighting the club’s ambitions and talent-rich squad under Maresca.
“I understand the stature of this club and can see the trajectory it is on with these players and the head coach,” said Delap. “It’s going to be an incredible place for me to develop, and I hope to achieve amazing things here and help the club win more trophies.”
Delap scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances for Ipswich last season, making him one of the few bright sparks in a difficult campaign for the Tractor Boys. A product of Manchester City’s academy, Delap had loan stints at Stoke City, Preston North End, and Hull City before joining Ipswich in 2024 for around £20 million.
Though he made just two top-flight appearances for Manchester City, Delap was able to gain valuable experience under manager Kieran McKenna at Ipswich, whom he credited for his development.

“Ipswich was the perfect environment for me to gain Premier League experience,” he added. “I’ll never forget the support I received from the fans and the coaching staff.”
Delap, the son of former Republic of Ireland international Rory Delap, originally began his youth career at Derby County before making the move to City’s elite development squad.
Despite finishing fourth in the Premier League and securing a spot in the Champions League, Chelsea struggled to find consistency up front. Cole Palmer was the club’s top scorer with 15 goals, while primary striker Nicolas Jackson managed 10 in 30 league appearances. Injuries limited Christopher Nkunku to just three goals, and teenage prospect Marc Guiu went goalless in his three appearances.
With the addition of Delap, Chelsea are hoping to bolster their attacking depth and find a long-term solution in the striker position.
Delap was named in England’s training squad for the European Under-21 Championships in Slovenia later this month, but is now expected to miss the tournament. Chelsea’s participation in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, taking place from 14 June to 13 July in the United States, will take priority.
The Blues face Los Angeles FC in their opening match on 16 June and see the tournament as a key opportunity to establish themselves on the global stage. With the added demands of the competition, squad depth — especially in attack — will be vital.
Chelsea’s business in the transfer window appears far from over. The club is in ongoing negotiations with AC Milan for goalkeeper Mike Maignan, but a significant gap remains between the clubs in their valuation of the 29-year-old French international, who is entering the final year of his contract.
Additionally, Chelsea have opened discussions regarding a potential move for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The 20-year-old, another England Under-21 international, has previously spent time in Chelsea’s academy and is seen as a player with high potential.
With Enzo Maresca now at the helm, Chelsea are making decisive moves to reshape the squad for success across multiple fronts. The signing of Liam Delap signals a clear intent to invest in young, talented players who can contribute immediately while growing under the guidance of a progressive manager.
Having won the UEFA Conference League last season, Chelsea are eager to build momentum and compete at the highest level in Europe once again. Delap’s arrival marks an important step in that journey.
