Thobani Ndaba killers should be charged with treason: Cele

Police Minister Bheki Cele says those responsible for killing police officers should be charged with treason. He was speaking during the funeral of slain Umvoti Municipality official, Thobani Ndaba in Pietermaritzburg. Ndaba was gunned down inside municipal premises in Greytown.

A traffic officer, Thobani Ndaba was assassinated in a hail of bullets – just a day after being promoted to Community Services Director at the municipality.

We know that there was planning that took place but not only planning, the kind of brutality, an AK (rifle) was used on a man. Almost twenty empty cartridges were picked up from there which means somebody wanted to kill somebody. That murder is planned, it’s brutal but also is on the law enforcer personnel, which I guess the call that we keep making to say it must be really a treason to kill a police officer,” said Cele. Transport Minister, Blade Nzimande agreed with Cele.                                      Bheki Cele

“I really do concur. If you attack a law enforcement officer, it’s an attack not just on the state but on the people of South Africa because we are a country for its people and we need to have order. We actually need to have a society that is safe, therefore to actually be tied to something very important.”

Cele believes the plot to kill Ndaba could not have been pulled off without someone at the municipality giving information about his movements.

The minister said the police’s task team investigating political killings in KwaZulu-Natal is on the case. He’s confident the team will crack the case soon
