Retired Constitutional Court Justice Albie Sachs says he’s surprised by Justice Minister Ronald Lamola’s promise to help secure a presidential pardon for convicted #FeesMustFall activist Kanya Cekeshe.
This after the Johannesburg magistrate’s court turned down Cekeshe’s appeal to overturn his eight-year sentence.
Sachs, who served on the bench for 15 years, finds the minister’s decision questionable.
“I don’t take a position on that, I’m a former judge.
“All I can say is it’s very unusual for a Minister of Justice to actually say he supports a presidential pardon. He obviously has support in very high places.”
Sachs was speaking at the Ahmed Kathrada Annual Lecture in Newtown, Johannesburg, on Tuesday.
