Caster Semenya to inspire a new generation of athletes through sports film

Caster Semenya

A new film was launched by a popular sports brand which documents and celebrates the life of SA Olympic medallist, Caster Semenya – The film, titled The Birthplace of Dreams, will be narrated by the star athlete herself – It portrays Caster’s journey from her hometown in Limpopo to a professional athlete and running coach. A film titled The Birthplace of Dreams, which celebrates the life of decorated South African athlete, Caster Semenya, was launched by Nike earlier today. The film portrays Caster’s journey from her hometown in Limpopo to being a professional athlete and running coach. Caster has been breaking and setting records for more than a decade, and in doing so inspired the next generation of athletes to play more sports and achieve their goals.

But she has rarely told her story in her own words. This film is narrated by Caster and gives the audience an authentic look into her world – where her dream began that set the stage for her athletic journey.

According to a press statement by Nike, Caster’s story starts in her hometown of Ga-Mashehlong, a small village outside Polokwane in South Africa. Before Caster dreamed of being a sprinter, she played football. “I played under 14. Most people came to see me play, how I played because they know I’m a girl. I was fast, I played a fast game,” said Caster. The Olympic and world champ said she had realised her talent at an early age and it was nurtured by her family, whom she attributes most of her success to. “Positivity comes from where you’re coming from.

How you’re raised, the love that you get from your family and their belief in you. If people believe in you, you’ll always be positive, you’ll be a believer,” said Caster. The athlete’s solid support structure and natural talent are what propelled the athlete into her track and field career, which is where she inspired the world. The support she received is Caster’s driving force and now she wants to pay it forward by inspiring the next generation of athletes.

Caster, together with her wife, Violet, and close friend, Koketso Mogapi, started their own development club called Masai Athletics Club in 2018. The club operates in Pretoria and Soweto and aims to find young athletes on grassroots level and develop their talent to become the next running stars. The club had more than 60 young aspiring athletes to date who are competing in some of SA’s top running competitions. The film focuses on Caster’s passion to instil a sense of belonging, family and inspiration for the next generation of athletes.
