There is coordinated sabotage of Joburg’s electricity infrastructure, according to Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse.
She has received reports from the City Power security guards on the Eldos substation fire and its points to criminality.
Phalatse says she has written to the Presidency and the National Prosecuting Authority seeking intervention.
Meanwhile, mop-up operations are set to begin.
City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena says that teams will have to clear the rubble and remove 40,000 litres of oil from the damaged Transformer.
Structural Engineers have been called to assess the damage.
All work, including cleaning up any environmental hazards, will be undertaken between Saturday and Tuesday.
The utility says they have already restored power at other affected substations.
