Teachers at Buyani Primary School in Finetown, south of Joburg, fear for their safety. This after principal Lazarus Baloyi was gunned down on Friday, 18 June.
“I can’t sleep. Everything has been turned upside down since Friday,” one teacher told the People’s Paper.
She didn’t know what led to the incident, but said they’d be at ease when the killer is arrested.
She said she didn’t look forward to going to work but would go as they were busy with assessments and had to prepare pupils’ reports.
Over the weekend, the Baloyi family described Lazarus as the father of their community.
Lazarus leaves behind two children, one in university and a three-month-old baby.
During a visit to the school, Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said he was extremely concerned about the rising number of killings of teachers.
“This is the third case I’m attending to in this area alone, where our principals are targeted,” said Lesufi, calling for more help from the police in making schools safer.
Teachers’ union Sadtu called on the education department to swiftly provide necessary support to the school.
Sadtu provincial secretary Tseliso Lediimo said: “We further urge law enforcement agencies to act quickly and arrests the culprits.
“We also call on all communities and progressive structures to mount school safety campaigns in pursuance of quality public education.
“We dip our banner in honour of the contribution comrade Lazarus Baloyi made towards the unity and strength of the organisation.”
