Border Management Authority concludes first phase of Easter weekend operations

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has concluded the first phase of its Easter weekend operations at the Grobler’s Bridge port of entry in Limpopo.

Officials including SAPS, defence members, and border guards are stationed at all 71 ports of entry.

Illegal immigration is one of the challenges authorities are dealing with as many people try and enter the country without the correct documentation.

BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato breaks down some of the biggest points of the movement.

“The Beitbridge Border Post where we are able to process around 67,000 people that exited the country into Zimbabwe and also into the continent. In terms of air, OR Tambo continues to lead with over 101,000 people. Cape Town harbour we were able to facilitate around 19,000 people and we are now preparing to deal with the return leg of the execution of our plan.”

In reference to a tragic bus accident that left at least 45 dead in Limpopo last week, Masiapato said that the bus and passengers had the required documents to travel into SA.
