Boity Thulo is Killing the Rap Game

South African rapper, Boity has certainly impacted the South African rap game, and her impact was recognised when Stogie T chose her for a very special remix.

Stogie T needs no introduction to South African hip hop and while many fans won’t hesitate to give him an instant nod of approval, Boity has had a harder time convincing her critics. The Bakae star is still somewhat of an unknown quantity so it said a lot that Stogie went out of his way to choose her specifically for a high-budget remix of his Original Recipe Freestyle.

Boity relished the opportunity to leave her mark on a song which we’re sure will be stuck in our heads for a few months once it drops and I had the pleasure of watching the rapper perform it live for the first time.

Boity Thulo

For those who have seen Boity performing live before, this quick-fire verse epitomised everything Mzansi has come to love about the most multi-skilled rapper in SA entertainment: catchy bars, cheeky subs and a whole lot of bravado.
All through her relatively short career, there have been murmurs that Boity doesn’t write her own material. I didn’t want to focus on the negativity but I had to find out how much of a hand she had in her newest song “ (and first ever collaboration with Stogie T) and she replied candidly:

Boity Thulo

“I did it all myself. As soon as I was told I’d be working on this amazing campaign, I realised I needed to bring something hot to the table.

I sat down and wrote a verse I knew I would be proud of, I practised and although I was nervous [to perform it] me and Stogie did it justice!”
Boity’s rap career began as a fun experiment, but she is quickly establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with in this industry; and she has achieved all of this with the help of only two singles (imagine the noise she’ll make when she drops an album!).

Durban-based influencer, Siya Ndamese led the way in praising Boity’s new verse and her impact on female hip hop when she commented, “We need more Boitys to shake up the game and make men uncomfortable in South Africa. We are here for the crown!”

I also took a moment to dive a little deeper in Boity’s past and ask about her relationship with KFC growing up. For many of us, “Kentucky” was a once in a while luxury and I was surprised to hear that Boity could relate.

“It was always on a Sunday – not every Sunday, but sometimes on a Sunday, my mother would surprise us with a Kentucky meal at home. It was always a special treat and something that we would get crazy excited for.

I still remember the smell and the taste and of course the excitement”.

Our interview time was up at this point but not before I could ask what Mzansi’s sauciest rapper eats her chicken with (I was looking for tomato sauce, barbecue sauce or even mustard)! To my surprise her rather simple answer was “None of the above”.

She’s changed the rap game and now she’s coming after the wrap game too. Whether you are a fan of the movement or not, you cannot deny that Boity is quickly becoming an unstoppable force in South African music.

Do you think that Boity is the reason why #TheWrapGameHasChanged?
