First, it was the on-again, off-again alcohol bans and now, the unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. The wine industry says it’s buckling under all these blows and it’s the small, black-owned businesses that are in real trouble.
A recent study by agricultural association Vinpro has found many of these brands may not survive the year.
“About 400 of the 529 wineries are very small,” said Rico Basson, Vinpro Managing Director.
“They, as small companies, do not have access to huge financial resources and therefore without being able to sell, are strained from cash.
