Job Purpose:

Overseeing the setup, laboratory infrastructure integration, operations, management of the Biorepository Unit, the generation of income to cover operational costs, as well as implementation of a complete Quality Management System. The manager will ensure that national and international ethical norms regarding biorepositories are adhered to.

Duties:

Quality Management:

Developing and managing a complete Quality Management System including policies, procedures, processes, and protocols for biobanking and laboratory services for the clinical and research community according to ISO and ISBER guidelines;
Maintaining an ethical and regulatory compliant environment, including but not limited to ethical handling of materials, and compliance with regulatory guidelines around the procurement, storage, and use of human samples;
Preparing the laboratory for accreditation in accordance with ISO 20387:2018 and ISBER guidelines.

Operational Management:

Acting as primary liaison between Faculty, Hamilton Company and Separations Scientific;
Overseeing day-to-day operations of the biorepository;
Overseeing the collection, processing, storage, retrieval and transfer of biological specimens according to best practices and strict adherence to all applicable policies and regulations;
Overseeing the validation and maintenance of all equipment in the unit, including that of the Hamilton BiOS Automated Storage System in conjunction with the Hamilton technical team;
Evaluating and overseeing expansion of unit facilities, services and operations as the biorepository inventory and throughput increases;
Responding to after-hours emergencies to ensure integrity of the facility and samples are maintained.

Leadership and Development:

Supervising employees, providing direction, mentorship, training and development, and managing performance to organisational goals and expectations;
Displaying and fostering a culture of respect and ethical behaviour.

Procurement and Inventory Management:

Preparing, managing, and adhering to the budget to maintain expenditure controls;
Implementing an inventory control system according to LEAN principles;
Facilitating and overseeing the purchase and distribution of 2D biobanking tubes from the Biorepository Unit, and all administrative duties associated with this;
Overseeing procurement of all equipment, reagents and consumables required for operations within the unit.

Client Relations:

Encouraging clients to make use of the BiOS and facilitating the inclusion of their sample repositories into the store;
Educating and advising potential and existing clients about the services offered by the Biorepository Unit, as well as procedures to be followed to ensure compliance to ISO standards;
Attending conferences, networking, developing client relations, and subsequent expansion of the client portfolio.

Candidate Requirements
Minimum MSc in a Life Sciences field;
Minimum of two years’ experience in managing an ISO accredited laboratory;
Minimum of five years’ working experience in an ISO accredited laboratory or clinical trials environment, with knowledge of GCP, GLP and GCLP practices;
Knowledge of biorepositories, sample collection and transport (with specific focus on IATA and Dangerous Goods Transport);
Knowledge of biological specimens, basic assays in blood and urine and types of collection tubes;
Experience with database software (i.e. LIMS systems) is essential;
Proficiency in MS Office;
Knowledge of business management principles;
A pro-active self-starter who can operate individually and as part of a team;
Own transportation and the ability to attend to after-hour emergencies at the Biorepository Unit;
Good problem-solving skills, adaptability and flexibility;
Dynamic, the ability to build relationships at all levels within the organisation, including with external clients and stakeholders;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Demonstrated leadership ability;
A track record of strong attention to detail, with a passion for quality;
Excellent organisational and management skills to plan, manage and prioritise workload, handle multiple tasks and manage competing deadlines and priorities.

Recommendation:

Experience working in a biobanking environment would be advantageous.
