President Ramaphosa arrives in Addis Ababa ahead of AU Summit

President Ramaphosa will leave the Ethiopian capital as chair of the African Union.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has been welcomed in Ethiopia by the country’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed ahead of the 33rd African Union (AU) Summit of heads of states and government.

Ramaphosa will leave the capital Addis Ababa as chair of the continental body.

He is heading the ambitious target of silencing the guns in 2020.

Ramaphosa landed in Addis Ababa around midnight – where he found the continent’s youngest head of state, Abiy Ahmed, waiting for him.

International Relations Minister Naledi Pandor, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, cooperative governance minister and former AU commission chair Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Minister In The Presidency Jackson Mthembu – all arrived ahead of the President.

On Saturday, Ramaphosa is expected to get full briefings on the continent’s progress towards its agenda 2063, and how the continent will reach this year’s target of silencing the guns.
