General Function

The primary job duty of the Associate Researcher is to conduct research within Eskom Specialisation Centre for Combustion Engineering. The incumbent will also be required to conduct a prescribed amount of undergraduate lectures to the school. The research objectives that are outlined by the Chair of Combustion Engineering are based on established research procedures in the Eskom Power Plant Engineering Institute (EPPEI). The scope of the research may be experimental and theoretical in nature. The candidate will also be required to assist with some of the administrative function of the centre.

Qualifications and Attributes

Education: A BSc (Eng) in Mechanical or Aeronautical or Chemical Engineering is essential, and an MSc (Eng) in any of these fields is essential.

Experience: Typically two years of technical experience on an industrial or research level would be considered advantageous.

Skills: Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. The ability to work effectively with staff, students, faculty, and corporate collaborators is required. Proficiency with basic Microsoft Office and graphics software is required. Competency in Computational Fluid Dynamics is a key pre-requisite. The candidate needs to be familiar with setting up and running lab-scale experimental facilities to conduct research and training. A record of inclusive conduct and evidence of multicultural skills in the workplace is required.

Other: This position deals extensively with an industrial partner and as such the incumbent may be privy to sensitive and confidential information. It is essential that cognisance is taken of this and that guidance is sought from superiors in case of uncertainty.

OHSE Issues: The job will require working in industrial environments. The incumbent must be able to work effectively in these environments and adhere to all prescribed safety protocols.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1. Collaborates in conducting research by working with students, staff, faculty, and/or other partners.

2. Conducts prescribed amount of undergraduate lectures.

3. Conducts research effectively by maintaining accurate records of experiments and analyses performed, conducting relevant literature searches, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of all current methods of experimentation.

4. Contributes to the development of new projects and grants by conducting literature searches, experimental research, and proposal writing.

5. Contributes to the dissemination of knowledge gained through research by preparing and publishing findings and presenting findings in meetings with partners and at scientific conferences.

6. Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

7. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development training, and attending training and/or courses required by the supervisor.

8. Contributes to the overall success of the project by performing all other duties as assigned which will include administrative tasks.

9. The breakdown of responsibilities shall be Research/Teaching/Administration – 60%/20%/20%

Supervision

The incumbent shall report directly to Chair of Combustion Engineering.
