Marvel officially announced that Thor 4 was on the way at this past weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con, dropping some major surprises about the movie in the process. Thor: Love and Thunder will not only reunite the terrific trio from Ragnarok – Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson and director Taika Waititi – but it’ll also bring back Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster. And this time she’ll become the Mighty Thor herself.
There’s been no confirmation from Marvel on who the villains of the film will be just yet, but there will have to be some formidable foes to phase these three Asgardian Avengers. And according to our sources, the studio may’ve found the right antagonist to take on the living gods, as We Got This Covered has been informed that Gorr the God Butcher will appear in Love and Thunder.
Last month, back before the Thor 4 announcement, we wrote that we’d also heard that Enchantress would be the central antagonist of the movie. That still seems to be the case, too, as we’ve been told that Gorr will serve as a supporting villain. So, it sounds like we may have something similar to Ragnarok‘s Hela and Skurge partnership on our hands. You can’t blame Waititi for sticking with a formula that worked the first time around, right?
Gorr’s a relatively recent addition to the Marvel universe, debuting in 2013. From a very superstitious, religious civilization, Gorr turns from the gods when his wife dies and makes it his mission to kill them all. He’s also a creation of writer Jason Aaron, whose work we already know is a big influence on Love and Thunder, seeing as he’s the one who came up with the idea to promote Jane to superhero status in The Mighty Thor comic series.
The God Butcher sounds like perfect secondary antagonist material, really, so this info makes a lot of sense. Marvel likely won’t drop more news about Thor: Love and Thunder for a while, though – and may even deny this report as well, as they so often do to help preserve the surprise – but hopefully they’ll start opening up on it soon as it inches closer to its November 5th, 2021 release date.
