Ajax Cape Town sign former Kaizer Chiefs defender

The 28-year-old played only four matches in all competitions for Chiefs last season prior to his release. Khumalo initially joined the Glamour Boys from SuperSport United two years ago.

Ajax Cape Town spokesman Thabiso ‘Shooz’ Mekuto has confirmed the signing of former Kaizer Chiefs left-back Sibusiso Khumalo.

“We have signed all the players that we have, and all those that we were looking for ja. So ja, he [Khumalo] has signed,” Mekuto told KickOff.com.

“Most of the contracts we have signed now are contracts for one season with a two-year option. We need to get back to the PSL first before we can have long-term contracts. I think we gonna have options on all the players.”

Mekuto believes Ajax will have no trouble complying with the National First Division’s Under-23 rule.

“Ajax have a lot of youngsters remember. Our players are mostly under 21. Brandon [Peterson] is under 23, Morne Nel under 23 … most of the players that we have are under 23. In the starting lineup we’ll have mostly Ajax players who are under 23, and so these are the additional players that we’ve signed.

“We are here to come back to the PSL. Favourite or no favourite we are not even interested in playing to those kinds of games.” Mekuto also revealed how the club managed to convince a top coach like Muhsin Ertugral to agree to go down with them to the NFD.

“Well it’s a no-brainer … this is a football club, not a team. He knows what we have in terms of the operation. He knows how we got ourselves where we are and it’s very important to sustain the legacy of Ajax Cape Town.

“I think we have to rectify what we have not done correctly so that we are able to move forward like the coach believes.

“We had a mandate you know to keep the team in the PSL and administratively we failed. That’s why we have to make sure that we address the wrongs that we have done last season.”

Ajax opens their campaign in the second tier with a trip to Jomo Cosmos at Vosloorus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
