AgriSA warns rising costs will threaten job security

The agricultural sector has warned that increasing wages will threaten job security in the country. This comes as the newly gazetted National Minimum Wage takes effect next month.

The minimum wage for each ordinary hour worked has been increased from R21.69 to R23.19 per hour.
AgriSA says although farmers want a decent wage for their workers, the rising cost of electricity, fuel, and fertilizer makes it impossible to get good returns.

“So farmers are experiencing extreme cost pressures, which at the end of the day will have a spillover impact on their ability to farm properly. That is the big concern we have,” said Christo van der Rheede from AgriSA.
