African star in Europe breaks goal record set by Barcelona legend Samuel Eto’o

A Cameroon striker has equalled Mohamed Salah’s incredible record for the most goals scored by an African player in a single season in Europe, and also broke a record set by FC Barcelona legend Samuel Eto’o.

Young Boys forward Jean-Pierre Nsame finished his 2019/20 Swiss Super League campaign in style, netting a brace in his side’s 3-1 win over St Gallen in a top-of-the-table clash on Monday night.

The former Angers and Amiens player has experienced a meteoric rise since joining Young Boys in 2017. His goals have helped ensure that the club has won three successive league titles after ending a 32-year wait, the first of which came in his first season after joining.

He netted 13 league goals in 2017/18, 15 in the following campaign, and ended 2019/20 with an incredible 32 strikes.

As a consequence, he equalled Salah’s record for the most goals scored by an African player in single a European top-flight campaign.

The Liverpool superstar famously managed this in 2017/18, when he set a new record for a 38-game Premier League season.

Nsame, who has been linked with a move to Rangers, also broke Samuel Eto’o’s record for the most goals scored by a Cameroon player in a European league. Back in the 2008/09 season, the former FC Barcelona striker scored 30 times in LaLiga.

The 27-year-old also moved up in the European Golden Shoe ranking, for which his 32 goals saw him receive 48 points because his strikes are only multiplied by 1.5 instead of two due to the fact that the Swiss top flight has a weaker UEFA coefficient than the other top leagues.
