6 Hobbies of the Rich and Famous: How Celebrities Pass Their Time

The path to celebrity stardom is often difficult. Countless auditions, request letters, and rejections require an intense motivation and focus; and even when success is achieved, the hard work doesn’t stop.

With this in mind, it’s no wonder that celebrities like to unwind, and their desire to escape from the daily grind can often lead to some interesting pastimes.

Let’s take a peek at some of the most interesting ones.

Taylor Swift – Snow Globes

Taylor’s bond with snow goes back a while. As well as her 2012 duet with Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, she loves to spend the festive period crafting snow globes.

If you’re wondering what to use to make such a thing then Taylor has the answer: mason jars, old Christmas decorations, and glitter. She found out how to do it on Pinterest and uses another form of social media, Instagram, to show off her creations to her millions of followers.

As well as making excellent gifts, she sees them as a therapeutic activity: something she can do with a group of friends to forget about the stresses of modern fame. She also said it makes her ‘feel like a little kid again’, which is something we all need from time to time.

Johnny Depp – Barbie Dolls

Can you do an impression of Barbie’s voice? Johnny Depp can. It’s how his passion for Mattel’s famous blonde doll started after his daughter, Lily Rose, asked him to do it when she was young.

His interest outlasted his daughter’s and he’s gone on to form an impressively unique collection of them ever since. If you’re looking for special Marilyn Monroe and Beyonce Barbie dolls, then Johnny’s your man.

Another perk is that the actor gets to use the dolls to try out new character voices to anyone who’ll listen, so it’s highly likely that Barbie sounded like Jack Sparrow at one point in the Depp household.

Tom Hanks – Typewriters

The Forrest Gump star’s hobby is refreshingly old-school. There’s nothing that the actor likes to do more than bang away on an archaic typewriter, often writing out letters and short stories.

He described the activity as having a ‘tactile pleasure’, something he argues you just can’t get from a laptop, and he obsesses over the sound and feel of the keys.

It’s led to him having 250 of the things, many of them vintage, and he even launched an app in 2014 called the Hanx Writer. This combines the digital world with the analog, allowing users to get the sensation of using a typewriter while on their smartphones by giving them specially-tailored fonts.

Now we know the one special item Tom would take with him if he were stranded on a desert island. Again.

David Arquette – Knitting

I know what you’re thinking: knitting’s a hobby for old ladies. Well, try telling that to David Arquette who learned the skill from his grandmother when he was a child.

He has been photographed on holiday several times with the needles, clicking away on a new sweater or scarf, and it’s this dedication that has led to one of his garments being showcased in a book for charity: Celebrity Scarves 2: Hollywood Knits for Cancer Research. He’s shared his favourite patterns in the same publication.

So (knitted) hats off to David for his charitable hobby. If he can help people out while doing something that he loves, then all power to him.

Pamela Anderson – Poker

The lady famous for running dramatically across beaches in a skimpy swimsuit can also create a mean hand, with her sharp displays at high-profile casinos disproving the dumb blonde stereotype.

What started off as a fun hobby quickly evolved into a passion – quite literally – when she married fellow poker player Rick Salomon (reportedly after losing a bet with him). This led to a costly divorce, remarriage, and then ANOTHER divorce in 2015 – maybe they can do it once more to get a three-of-a-kind.

Her love for the game led to a business venture in 2012, when she set up BamPoker, a Facebook app where users could pit their wits against each other. It was an interesting novelty idea that gave players a different option to their usual diet of online poker sites and video poker games, but the venture was short-lived and stopped running a few years ago.

Paris Hilton – Frog Catching

So, we’ve saved the weirdest for last. That’s right, socialite Paris Hilton loves to catch frogs.

Armed with nothing more than a bucket, the ex-model loves nothing more than stalking the creatures around her mansion’s estate.

If you’re worried that the amphibians might come to harm, then don’t be: Paris is an animal rights activist and immediately releases them back to the wild after catching them.

Maybe it’s the tricky nature of the task that appeals to Paris, or maybe she hopes one will turn into a prince, but one thing’s for sure – it’s a contender for strangest hobby ever.

So, if you were feeling short of inspiration on a quiet Sunday afternoon, then hopefully this list will give you some idea as to what to do.  You never know, in a few short weeks you could be an expert knitter or a ninja frog-catcher!
