Nearly 200 Sudanese protesters released

The authorities have not divulged the exact number of protesters detained in the capital.
Approximately 186 detainees have been released by the Sudanese authorities ahead of a possible decision by the intelligence services to release many more. However, this does not apply to the hundreds of protesters arrested by the security forces during the ongoing protests sweeping across the North African country.

Tuesday’s release followed a statement by the Information Ministry saying that the director of the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS), Salah Abdalla Gosh, had ordered their freedom, reported the Sudan Tribune.

200 Sudanese protesters

Mass arrests have been carried out by Sudan’s security services during the protests with dozens of activists also killed during clashes with security forces. The protesters are demanding the government of President Omar Al Bashir resign over allegations of political incompetence and soaring prices.

While Gosh has spoken about releasing more of those arrested, the Tribune reported this decision did not involve the release of opposition leaders and activists.

The authorities have not divulged the exact number of protesters detained in the capital, Khartoum, and the various states but rights groups say more than 1000 protesters, including political leaders, activists, students and journalists, have been detained.
