Yizo Yizo creator Tebogo Mahlatsi has died

Tebogo Mahlatsi passed away this Monday morning. The Yizo Yizo creator died at the age of 49 after battling cancer. A friend, Angus Gibson close to Tebogo confirmed his passing to ZiMoja. We just learnt the news about his passing, it’s very sad. I am on my way to his house as we speak.
Mahlatsi was part of the groundbreaking and controversial youth drama Yizo Yizo (1999), which is currently being aired on the streaming service Netflix, Portrait of a Young Man Drowning (1999), and For Love and Broken Bones (2016).
He has been behind the creation of Bomb’s drama series such as Jacob’s Cross, Isibaya, and Ayeye. After being with Bomb Productions for two decades, Mahlatsi started a new company, Moseling Films. He left behind a wife and two kids. According to The Bomb Shelter, where Mahlatsi worked as a company director, he completed film school at the Africa Cultural Centre in 1993. Six years later, he won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival for his debut short film, Portrait of A Young Man Drowning.
Mahlatsi is best known for being the co-creator and a director on the three seasons of the South African television phenomenon, Yizo Yizo – currently streaming on Netflix. Other shows he has co-cteated and directed include Bomb Production’s Jacob’s Cross, Isibaya, Ayeye and most recently, Shaka ILembe.
