President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been meeting with the leaders of opposition parties in Zimbabwe but not the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)’s Nelson Chamisa.
The meeting took place at Mnangagwa’s farm in central Zimbabwe on Sunday, fuelling criticism that negotiations are one-sided. The meeting came days after former President Thabo Mbeki was in Harare, prompting speculation he’s been asked to mediate an end to Zimbabwe’s political crisis.
Sunday’s meeting included Lovemore Madhuku of the National Constitutional Assembly and Thokozani Khupe, who leads a breakaway faction of the MDC. They are both members of the Political Actors Dialogue, or POLAD, which the main MDC leader Chamisa has refused to join. Mnangagwa reiterated that Zimbabwe’s political issues can only be discussed via the POLAD platform.
But on Sunday, Chamisa said that POLAD was useless, claiming on Twitter that those who are part of it are members of Mnangagwa’s choir. The standoff shows how deep the gulf still is between Zimbabwe’s two-man political rivals and how far Zimbabwe’s crisis is from a lasting solution.
