The Cape Winelands District Municipality said that rain that started falling late on Monday evening had not been enough to penetrate active fire lines.
Firefighters have been battling a number of blazes in the Breede Valley and Witzenberg regions of that municipality for over a week now amid very hot and windy conditions.
The municipality’s Jo-Anne Otto said that with regard to the Bain’s Kloof, Slanghoek and the Elandsberg fires, the rain delayed backburning operations because the ground was too wet.
“Although the rain brought some relief through cooler weather, it made little impact on the fire lines, and will burn away quickly in today’s heat. The fire at Fairy Glen offered a few more challenges. A few smoldering spots continue in the inaccessible areas high up on the west side of the mountains. However, the fire line on the right side ignited an area with a high fuel load, and pushed by the strong wind, the fire quickly ran up the mountain.”
In Kluitjieskraal, in Wolseley, at least 22,000 hectares have burnt over the past seven days.
That operational team has reported that there have been no hotspots between the Kluitjieskraal and Voëlvlei dam area for the last two days and it’s likely teams will be pulled from these areas.
