Western Cape Education Dept to continue engaging with concerned parents of J.G. Meiring High School pupils after stabbing

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said it would continue engaging concerned parents of pupils at J.G. Meiring High School in Goodwood.

A grade 11 pupil from the school was stabbed and injured just outside the school gates on Monday afternoon.

Parents staged a protest outside the school on Tuesday to voice their concerns about reports of violence at the school.

They also raised issues of high staff turnover and teacher absenteeism.

Provincial education spokesperson, Kerry Mauchline, said they took these concerns very seriously.

“We do have a group of parents who have a set of grievances with the principal, and they’ve been raising such incidents in the media. We’ve been engaging frequently with parents, and we will continue to do so.”

She said they were also working to address issues of violence at the school.

“We’re aware and have been working with SAPS in that area because crime in the area has been increasing, and it’s been a concern for residents. So, we’re considering all the time to engage with them through our normal channels and to support the school and the surrounding community as best we can.”
