National government pledges to assist Western Cape in fighting COVID-19

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize says President Cyril Ramaphosa will be visiting the Western Cape next week. The Health Department will assist the province in fighting the spread of COVID-19.

It remains the epicenter of the South African epidemic, with almost 4, 000 confirmed cases and 79 deaths.

Infections are doubling every eight days and this is because authorities say transmissions have reached the community stage.

“This is where the virus is being caught at your local store where you are gathering to get your grant anywhere we people are gathering that is where the transmissions are happening,” said Western Cape Premier Alan Winde.

Winde says moving back to Level 5 is always a possibility.

“Government is working hard so that we have the best response for you as we move to the peak which is going to be with us in a very short while in a few weeks,” he said.

The premier says most of the people who have died due to COVID-19 had serious comorbidities – including diabetes, hypertension, and HIV.

Plans to turn the Cape Town International Convention Centre into the biggest temporary COVID-19 hospital with more than 850 beds are at an advanced stage.

Three additional, temporary COVID-19 hospitals, with more than 1, 400 beds are also in progress.
