Wayne Rooney linked with a shock Man United return

Wayne Rooney linked with a shock Man United return. With Marcus Rashford set to be sidelined for about three months, Solskjaer has just two forwards at his disposal from now until April in Anthony Martial and 18-year-old Mason Greenwood.

With Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer currently in the midst of a striker crisis, Wayne Rooney, the club’s all-time record goalscorer, has surprisingly been tipped as the man who could help the team during this difficult time.

After Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo revealed that Edinson Cavani has requested an exit from the club this month, many have urged United to make a move for the Uruguayan, but Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol believes the Red Devils should look a little closer to home.

Speaking on the current situation at the struggling 20-time English champions, Solhekol suggested that Rooney should be considered by Solskjaer. “In the past, sometimes they have surprised us by who they’ve signed, the players they’ve gone for,” he said, according to the Daily Express.

“I remember when Sir Alex Ferguson signed Eric Cantona out of the blue when they signed Andy Cole out of the blue when they signed Henrik Larsson on loan out of the blue.

“There is one player who’s a Manchester United legend, who’s scored more goals for Manchester United than anyone else, somebody who’s scored more goals for England than anyone else, who is 34 years old, who is a player-coach at Derby County, he lives close to Carrington – maybe it’s time to give Wayne Rooney a call.

“Why not? Would he not get into this Manchester United team? Would he not improve this squad? A quick fix.”

The 34-year-old, currently at Derby County in the Championship, spent 13 years at United between 2004 and 2017, scoring 253 goals in 559 matches.
