Joburg Water: Gauteng’s 20% water restrictions to continue

Johannesburg Water has issued a series of notices to Gauteng residents that its bulk water supplier, Rand Water, has been forced to continue with 20% water restrictions.

This was due to the system experiencing severe pressure, with water demand consistently exceeding supply, Johannesburg Water spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela said.

The restrictions are necessary for Rand Water’s network systems to recover, and will be impacting parts of Johannesburg. Those affected will experience intermittent water supply.

Mavimbela did not say for how long this would continue, but reminded residents that Johannesburg was still under level one water restrictions.

Residents are thus urged to save water where they can, to ease pressure on the system as much as possible.

Compounding Joburg’s water woes is Rand Water’s power supply issue at the Zuikerbosch purification station recently, which impacted the Palmiet pumping system.

This feeds the Meyers Hill reservoir, and supplies the South Hills tower.

The area’s reservoir is still below the threshold to allow for water to be pumped into the tower, which means the tower area is still without water.

Joburg Water also said a major burst pipe in Ennerdale has left the area, as well as a portion of Lawley, without water.

The time of completion to fix this unplanned outage is not yet known.

Here are the area still affected by water restrictions:

Save water by following these easy tips:

  • Ensure dripping taps are closed properly.
  • Repair leaking taps and toilets as soon as possible.
  • Wash your vehicle on the grass and water your lawn at the same time.
  • Put an empty 2L plastic bottle or a brick in the toilet’s water tank.
  • Use a watering-can whenever possible, instead of a hosepipe.
  • Shorten your shower time and install water-reducing heads.
  • Reduce the amount of bath water and avoid filling the bath to a depth greater than 100mm.
  • Don’t leave the tap open while shaving or brushing your teeth; use a glass of water to rinse instead.
  • Reuse bath and shower water for your garden and pot plants.
  • Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants to keep them hydrated for longer.
  • Use an automatic washing machine on full loads only.
  • Don’t let the faucet run while cleaning vegetables.
