Unemployed doctors in KZN plead for urgent placement

A group of unemployed doctors in KwaZulu-Natal is appealing to health officials to urgently place them. The doctors will march to the offices of the provincial Health Department in Pietermaritzburg today.

Last week, Health Minister Dr. Joe Phaahla cited budgetary constraints as the reason for the placement challenges. A 29-year-old unemployed doctor, Nombuso Phehle, says communities in deep rural areas need their services.

“There is no rural area that we are not willing to go to, to help our communities, to help our people. I was struggling to study; I was even struggling for something to eat. Then, second year onwards, I got a private bursary, and then 2 years of community service at RK Khan Hospital, and then 1 year at Catherine Booth Hospital. It’s so sad that where I was working, there are no doctors that replaced us. The community needs us.”
