UK coronavirus home lockdown must last until June

Britain must stay in full coronavirus lockdown until June to beat coronavirus, a health chief has warned. It comes after the UK’s death toll for the deadly bug surged to 1,019 last night – the biggest 24 hour jump the nation has seen so far. Professor Neil Ferguson said the entire population could be required to stay at home for nearly three months to stop the spread of the bug.

And he warned we are also likely to have to keep social distancing for several months after the full lockdown is lifted. Prof Ferguson told The Times: “We’re going to have to keep these measures [the full lockdown] in place, in my view, for a significant period of time — probably until the end of May, maybe even early June. May is optimistic.

He said that when the lockdown was finally lifted, people would probably still be asked to enforce some forms of social distancing for months more. It could mean schools and universities stay shut until the autumn, with people told to continue working from home.
Yesterday, Boris Johnson said the situation would “get worse before it gets better”.

In a letter being sent to households across the UK this week, the PM suggests the government will not hesitate to enforce further lockdown measures if needed. His letter states: “It’s important for me to level with you — we know things will get worse before they get better. But we are making the right preparations, and the more we all follow the rules, the fewer lives will be lost and the sooner life can return to normal.”

He added: “We will not hesitate to go further if that is what the scientific and medical advice tells us we must do. Mr Johnson announced earlier this week that he will run the country from his Downing Street flat after testing positive for coronavirus.
