Moshabela: Tackling financial exclusion a key focus area for new UCT VC

Financial exclusion is one of the key focus areas for the University of Cape Town (UCT)’s new vice-chancellor, Professor Mosa Moshabela.

He’s been announced as the institution’s 11th vice-chancellor and takes up the post in October.

Moshabela will take over from Professor Daya Reddy, who’s been acting in the position since March last year, when Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng resigned.

UCT has seen numerous student protests in the past few years, particularly over student finances.

Moshabela said the university should put measures in place to ensure deserving students were not financially excluded.

“Not to say they shouldn’t pay for their education but to put in place the means and the measures to make sure that their education is subsidised or paid for through the different avenues that the university has.”

However, Moshabela said that for this to happen, the institution needed to be financially stable first.
