Rescue operations mostly suspended following Türkiye-Syria earthquake

Rescue operations have largely been suspended following the massive earthquakes that hit parts of Syria and Türkiye, claiming the lives of more than 42,000 people.

South Africa’s ambassador to Türkiye says her department is struggling to get hold of a South African couple that approached the embassy for help in getting home.

They lost their passports and other important papers in the devastation of those deadly earthquakes.

Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba is thankful no South Africans were killed in the earthquakes, but says she does not agree with the decision to call off rescue operations.
