KZN Transport Department to deploy heavy police presence ahead of Easter

KZN Transport Department to deploy heavy police presence ahead of Easter! The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has announced plans to deploy a heavy police presence ahead of the busy Easter period to curb road accidents and enhance safety.

This comes after a tragic bus crash on the N2 highway claimed nine lives on Sunday. The victims were members of the 12 Apostle Church in Trinity who were returning from a church gathering when the accident occurred.

On Thursday, the department held a memorial service to honor the lives lost in the crash.

Government Strengthens Road Safety Measures

With the Easter season approaching, the province expects higher traffic volumes as people travel for religious gatherings, holidays, and family visits. In response, KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma assured that damage control and prevention efforts are already in motion.

“We’ve started a new trend. As we approach Easter, the religious sector will be the focal point, and it will be a focus area for our safety campaigns,” Duma said.

Clampdown on Unroadworthy Vehicles

Duma emphasized that law enforcement officers will intensify inspections of public transport vehicles to ensure safety compliance.

“Vehicles that are not roadworthy will be impounded,” he warned.

The department will work closely with taxi associations and bus operators to conduct thorough inspections before Easter weekend. This initiative aims to prevent deadly accidents caused by mechanical failures and non-compliant vehicles.

Easter Road Safety Campaign to Be Launched in KwaDukuza and Mandeni

Duma also confirmed that the province’s Easter road safety campaign will be launched in the KwaDukuza/Mandeni region—an area identified as a high-risk zone for road accidents.

This strategic approach seeks to reduce accidents by focusing on roadblocks, vehicle inspections, and law enforcement patrols in known accident hotspots.

Preventing Future Road Tragedies

The recent bus crash on the N2 has once again highlighted the dangers of reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and road safety non-compliance.

To avoid similar tragedies, authorities are urging drivers, transport operators, and passengers to prioritize safety.

Key Safety Measures for the Easter Season

  • Strict Vehicle Inspections: Public transport vehicles, including buses and taxis, must be roadworthy before being allowed to operate.
  • Law Enforcement Roadblocks: Police officers and traffic officials will conduct regular roadblocks to check for drunken driving, valid licenses, and compliance with traffic regulations.
  • Speed and Reckless Driving Control: Speed monitoring and enforcement will be increased to reduce accidents caused by excessive speed and reckless driving.
  • Public Awareness Campaigns: Road safety education programs will be rolled out to encourage responsible driving behavior among road users.

Religious Sector to Play a Role in Road Safety

Given that many Easter travelers will be attending religious gatherings, the department will collaborate with church leaders and faith-based organizations to promote safe travel practices.

Duma encouraged churchgoers and event organizers to prioritize passenger safety by hiring reliable, roadworthy transport services.

A Call for Caution and Responsibility

With Easter being one of the busiest travel seasons in South Africa, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant on the roads.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is calling on all motorists, transport operators, and passengers to:

  • Obey all traffic laws and speed limits
  • Avoid overloading vehicles
  • Ensure drivers are well-rested before long trips
  • Conduct thorough vehicle checks before traveling
  • Report reckless driving or non-compliant vehicles

As the province mourns the loss of the nine victims from Sunday’s tragic crash, officials are determined to implement stricter measures to prevent future road accidents.

With enhanced police visibility, vehicle inspections, and public safety awareness, authorities hope to make the Easter period safer for everyone traveling on KwaZulu-Natal’s roads.
