Toyota shares plans to reveal the most powerful RAV4 yet

Toyota has released an image of what it describes as the “most powerful RAV4 yet”, with the flagship variant set to debut at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

Interestingly, the new derivative will take the form of a plug-in hybrid.

While the Japanese firm has yet to release details of the powertrain, it’s worth noting the current self-charging RAV4 hybrid (which, of course, isn’t a plug-in variant … and isn’t part of the range here in South Africa) generates 163 kW in all-wheel-drive guise.

Whether or not the newcomer will employ a similar set-up (a naturally aspirated 2,5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a pair of electric motors) remains to be seen.

Still, Toyota promises the upcoming plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) version of the fourth-generation RAV4 will offer “surprising performance capabilities” and “spirited acceleration”.

Seen here in a new Supersonic Red hue, the RAV4 plug-in hybrid will also feature subtle model-specific styling cues.
