Free State retains top spot once again in South Africa after recording highest matric pass rate

The Free State has retained its number one spot, with the highest recorded matric pass rate for several consecutive years.

On Thursday night, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga revealed that the class of 2023 in the country recorded the highest matric pass rate since the dawn of democracy, clinching 82.9% overall.

Motshekga released the results of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams in Randburg.

While the Free State retained its top spot for the province with the highest matric pass rate for 2023, with 89.03%, the biggest improvement came from Limpopo.

South Africa’s northern province secured a pass rate of 79.5%, an increase of 7.4% from 2022.

However, Limpopo wasn’t the biggest surprise of the evening, as Motshekga explained: “The second province, for me, it was a surprise, is KwaZulu-Natal.”

KwaZulu-Natal, making up 25% of the overall national percentage, managed to secure the second spot, knocking Gauteng off second place by a mere 1%.
