The Chief Executive Officer of Thembisa Hospital and the Gauteng Health Department’s Chief Financial Officer has been placed on precautionary suspension. The Gauteng Provincial Government says it has decided to ensure their presence in the office does not impede investigations into their conduct.
Thembisa Hospital CEO Ashley Mthunzi, and Health Department CFO, Lerato Madyo, are accused of overseeing hundreds of millions of irregular expenditures at the hospital. The surge in spending was discovered by whistleblower Babita Deokaran weeks before her assassination a year ago. The Health Department has also opened a criminal case.
It has also been confirmed that Gauteng’s Health Department Head, Nomonde Nolutshungu, has recently received threats from anonymous sources. These, are also being investigated by the police. Five suspects have been charged with Deokoran’s murder.
